A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool used to capture, store, manage, analyze, and display geographic data, i.e. data tied to a precise spatial location (coordinates, address, land parcel, etc.).
A GIS combines two types of information: spatial data — the position, shape, and geometry of objects (points, lines, polygons), such as a well, a river, or a watershed — and attribute data — the characteristics associated with those objects, such as a well's depth, a river's flow rate, or an aquifer's geological nature. The GIS links these two data types together to enable complex spatial analyses and produce thematic maps.

Main Functions Fonctions Principales
- Acquisition of data (digitizing, remote sensing, GPS)Acquisition des données (numérisation, télédétection, GPS)
- Storage and organization into thematic layersStockage et organisation en couches thématiques (« layers »)
Application in Hydrogeology Application en Hydrogéologie
In the context of this course, GIS is particularly useful for:Dans le contexte de ce cours, le SIG est particulièrement utile pour :
- Delineating watersheds and aquifer recharge areas from a DEM (Digital Elevation Model, e.g. 12.5 m or 30 m resolution).Délimiter les bassins versants et les aires d'alimentation des aquifères à partir d'un MNT (Modèle Numérique de Terrain, ex. 12,5 m ou 30 m de résolution).
- Mapping piezometry (groundwater levels) through spatial interpolation.
- Locating wells, boreholes, and springs, and analyzing their distribution.
- Integrating shapefile data to represent administrative, geological, or hydrographic boundaries.
GIS is thus an essential tool for integrated water resource management, allowing field, remote-sensing, and modeling data to be combined within a single spatial analysis environment.
